About the Thailand economy
Thailand operates an upper middle-income economy valued at $526.4 billion in 2024 at official exchange rates. Services generate 59.2 percent of output, industry 32.1 percent, and agriculture 8.7 percent (OpenFactBook, 2024 est.). Tourism, textiles, agricultural processing, electronics, and automobiles and automotive parts anchor the industrial base. The United States is the leading export destination at 18 percent of exports, followed by China at 13 percent and Japan at 7 percent. Machine parts, integrated circuits, trucks, and cars lead the export mix. Real GDP growth has run modest in recent years, posting 2.6 percent in 2022, 2.0 percent in 2023, and 2.5 percent in 2024.
The labor force totals approximately 40.6 million workers as of 2024. Headline unemployment is among the lowest in the world at 0.7 percent in 2024; youth unemployment for workers aged 15 to 24 is 4.3 percent. The low headline rate masks widespread informality. The National Statistical Office counted about 21 million informal workers in 2023, or 52.3 percent of the 40.1 million people employed. Agriculture accounts for 55.4 percent of informal workers. Informal workers typically lack contracts and social protection, and the NSO reports that they earn roughly half the wages of formal employees.
Thailand sets its minimum wage as a daily rate that varies by province. A tripartite national wage committee approves the rates. Increases effective 1 January 2025 set the range at 337 to 400 baht per day, roughly $9.73 to $11.55. The top 400 baht tier first applied to high-cost areas including Phuket, Chonburi, Rayong, Chachoengsao, and Koh Samui. Bangkok joined the 400 baht tier on 1 July 2025, alongside larger hotels and entertainment venues nationwide. The lowest rates apply in the southern border provinces. Because over half the workforce is informal, the statutory floor reaches a smaller share of workers than the headline coverage suggests.
