About the Fiji economy
Fiji runs an upper-middle income Pacific island economy built on tourism, with output of $13.1 billion in purchasing power parity terms in 2024 and GDP per capita of $14,100. Services generate 56.2 percent of GDP, industry 14.1 percent, and agriculture 8.4 percent (OpenFactBook, 2024 est.). Sugar processing remains a core industry alongside tourism, clothing, gold, and lumber; raw sugar ranks among the top five export commodities, together with bottled water and fish. Remittances from Fijians working abroad contributed 9.2 percent of GDP in 2023, a significant income channel for households.
The labor force numbers approximately 387,800 workers as of 2024. Headline unemployment is low at 4.4 percent in 2024, but youth unemployment runs much higher at 15.5 percent, and 24.1 percent of the population lived below the national poverty line in 2019. Emigration pressure is persistent. The net migration rate stands at minus 5.3 migrants per 1,000 population in 2025, as workers leave for higher wages in Australia and New Zealand. Employers in tourism, construction, and skilled trades report a limited domestic workforce as a result.
Fiji sets a statutory national minimum wage and raised it in stages. The rate rose to FJD 4.50 per hour on 1 August 2024 under Legal Notice 44 of 2024, then to FJD 5.00 per hour on 1 April 2025, the second increase in under 18 months. The Minister for Employment announced the change after consultations with unions and employer groups, and ten sectoral wage orders covering industries such as building and civil engineering, hotel and catering, manufacturing, security services, and wholesale and retail trade set higher floors above the national rate. At the 2024 average exchange rate of 2.268 Fijian dollars per US dollar, the national minimum equals roughly 2.20 US dollars per hour.
