About the Morocco economy
Morocco runs a lower middle-income economy with a GDP of $154.431 billion at official exchange rates in 2024 and real growth of 3.2 percent that year. Services generate 54.1 percent of output, industry 24.1 percent, and agriculture 10.1 percent (OpenFactBook, 2024 est.). The industrial base centers on automotive parts, phosphate mining and processing, aerospace, food processing, textiles, and tourism. The top export commodities are fertilizers, cars, garments, insulated wire, and tomatoes, with Spain taking 20 percent of exports and France 17 percent. Remittances from Moroccans abroad added the equivalent of 8.1 percent of GDP in 2023.
The labor force totals 12.475 million workers as of 2024, a modest share of a population of 37.4 million. Unemployment stood at 9 percent in 2024 by international estimates; the national statistics agency HCP reported a higher 13 percent for 2025, with roughly 1.62 million people out of work. Youth unemployment is severe; HCP measured 37.2 percent for workers aged 15 to 24 in 2025. Female labor force participation remains very low at 15.1 percent in 2025. Informal employment covers roughly 77 percent of total employment according to World Bank research, which limits the practical reach of statutory wage floors.
Morocco sets two separate statutory minimum wages. The SMIG covers industry, commerce, and services as an hourly rate; the SMAG covers agriculture as a daily rate, and it sits well below the SMIG on a monthly basis. Under a 5 percent increase decreed in December 2025, the second phase of the April 2024 social pact, the SMIG rises to 17.92 dirhams per hour from 1 January 2026, roughly 3,429 dirhams gross per month at the standard 191.33 monthly hours. The SMAG rises to 97.44 dirhams per day from 1 April 2026, roughly 2,533 dirhams gross per month over 26 working days. The agricultural increase starts three months later to align with farm production cycles. These adjustments bring the cumulative rise since 2021 to 20 percent for the SMIG and 25 percent for the SMAG.
